🛠️ What You Need Before Starting

💻 Windows / Mac PC

Required to download ArkOS and flash the MicroSD card. Any modern PC works.

💾 MicroSD Card Reader

To connect your MicroSD card to your PC. Most laptops have a built-in slot. USB adapters cost ~$5.

📱 R36S Device

R36S 64GB or 128GB. Both versions are fully compatible with ArkOS 2.0.

💾 MicroSD Card (32GB+)

The card that came with your R36S works. Or use a new Samsung/SanDisk MicroSD (Class 10 or faster).

🔧 Balena Etcher (Free)

Free tool to flash the ArkOS image to your MicroSD. Download from balena.io/etcher.

📶 Internet Connection

To download ArkOS image file (~1-2GB). A stable connection is recommended.

📥 Step 1–3: Download ArkOS
STEP 1

Download the ArkOS Image File

Go to the official ArkOS GitHub releases page: github.com/christianhaitian/arkos/releases

Download the latest release for the RK2023 / R36S device. The file will be named something like ArkOS_RK2023_YYYYMMDD.img.gz. File size is approximately 1–2GB. Wait for the download to complete fully before proceeding.

STEP 2

Download and Install Balena Etcher

Go to balena.io/etcher and download the free Balena Etcher tool for your operating system (Windows or Mac). Install it normally. This is the tool you will use to write the ArkOS image to your MicroSD card.

STEP 3

Insert Your MicroSD Card

Remove the MicroSD card from your R36S (it's in the slot on the side of the device). Insert it into your PC using a MicroSD card reader or your laptop's built-in slot. Your PC should recognize it as a removable drive.

⚠️ Warning: Flashing ArkOS will erase everything on your MicroSD card, including any existing games and save files. If you want to keep your saves, back them up to your PC first by copying the roms and saves folders.
🔥 Step 4–5: Flash ArkOS to MicroSD
STEP 4

Open Balena Etcher and Select Files

Open Balena Etcher. Click "Flash from file" and select the ArkOS .img.gz file you downloaded. Then click "Select target" and choose your MicroSD card from the list. Make sure you select the correct drive — selecting the wrong drive will erase it.

STEP 5

Flash and Verify

Click "Flash!" to start the process. Balena Etcher will write the ArkOS image to your MicroSD card and then automatically verify it. This takes approximately 10–15 minutes depending on your card speed. Do not remove the card during this process. When complete, Etcher will show a green “Flash Complete!” message.

Pro tip: If Balena Etcher shows an error, try running it as Administrator (Windows) or with sudo (Mac). Also make sure your MicroSD card is not write-protected.
⚡ Step 6–8: First Boot Setup
STEP 6

Insert MicroSD and Power On

Safely eject the MicroSD card from your PC. Insert it back into your R36S. Press and hold the power button for 2–3 seconds to turn on the device. The first boot takes longer than normal — approximately 2–3 minutes — as ArkOS expands the filesystem. Do not turn off the device during this process.

STEP 7

Complete First Boot Configuration

ArkOS will guide you through initial setup: timezone selection, language, and button mapping. Use the D-pad to navigate and the A button to confirm. Set your timezone to match your location. The default button layout works well for most users — you can change it later in Settings.

STEP 8

Update ArkOS (Recommended)

Once booted, go to Options → Updates to check for the latest ArkOS updates. If your R36S has WiFi capability, connect to your network first. If not, you can download updates manually from the ArkOS GitHub page and transfer via MicroSD.

🎮 Step 9–10: Add Your Games
STEP 9

Copy ROMs to the MicroSD Card

Connect your MicroSD card to your PC again. You will see a roms folder. Inside are subfolders for each system: gba, snes, nes, psx, n64, etc. Copy your ROM files into the correct system folder. GBA games go in roms/gba/, PS1 games go in roms/psx/, and so on.

STEP 10

Scrape Game Art and Launch

Eject the MicroSD and reinsert into your R36S. Boot up — ArkOS will automatically detect your new games. To add game artwork (box art, screenshots), go to Options → Scraper and run the scraper. This downloads artwork for all your games automatically. Then navigate to any system and select a game to start playing.

Setup complete! Your R36S is now running ArkOS with your games loaded. Total time from start to playing: approximately 25 minutes. If you run into any issues, the ArkOS community on Reddit (r/SBCGaming) is very helpful.
